World Youth Day Celebration on the Feast of Christ the King

Each year, the Archdiocese of Port of Spain joins the global Church in celebrating World Youth Day (WYD) on the Feast of Christ the King. This is a special moment for youth across Trinidad and Tobago to come together in prayer, worship, and fellowship, marking the universal celebration of Christ as King of the Universe. It is also time to celebrate the spiritual commitment so many young people make. On this day, young people are encouraged to reflect on the themes of the Gospel, renew their commitment to Christ, and the Church honours the energy and vitality of youth.

In the Jubilee Year, there was a gathering of Youth in Rome.

There will also be international celebrations in November when Pope Leo’s annual letter to youth is published.

World Youth Day Pilgrimage 2027

World Youth Day (WYD) is a global event organized by the Catholic Church that gathers young people from around the world to celebrate their faith, encounter Christ, and experience the universal Church. Initiated by Pope Saint John Paul II in 1985, WYD takes place every two to three years in a different host country.

Each WYD centers around a biblical theme that speaks to the spiritual journey of young Catholics. Early gatherings focused on hope and discipleship, with themes like “Always be prepared to make a defense to anyone who calls you to account for the hope that is in you” (Rome 1986) and “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life” (Spain 1989). As the event grew, so did its call to mission and mercy, with themes such as “As the Father sent me, so am I sending you” (Manila 1995), “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy” (Kraków 2016), and “Mary arose and went with haste” (Lisbon 2023).

WYD typically spans a week and includes prayer, catechesis, worship, and cultural exchange, culminating in a final Mass with the Pope attended by hundreds of thousands. It offers young people a chance to grow in their faith, connect across cultures, and witness the living presence of Christ in the Church.

The upcoming theme for WYD 2027 is: “Take courage! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33) and Holy Father Pope Leo has invited the youth of the word to join him.

Thinking of World Youth Day 2027?

World Youth Day is not just another trip abroad—it is a sacred pilgrimage. As Pope Francis reminds us, “Be a pilgrim, not a tourist.” To commit to WYD means preparing your heart, mind, and life for a journey of faith, sacrifice, and encounter with Christ. We invite you to reflect deeply before saying “yes.” This slideshow presents 15 key questions every potential pilgrim should prayerfully answer. They touch on your spiritual readiness, responsibilities, finances, and openness to the challenges of pilgrimage. Honest reflection ensures your “yes” is both intentional and joyful.

The Archdiocese of Port of Spain will have an official delegation attending WYD 2027 – Join Us!
