WORLD YOUTH DAY

World Youth Day

World Youth Day (WYD) is a global event for young people organized by the Catholic Church, where youth from around the world come together to celebrate their faith, share experiences, and deepen their relationship with Christ. The event was initiated by Pope John Paul II in 1986 as a way to bring together young people to encounter the Universal Church, strengthen their faith, and experience the joy of being part of a worldwide Catholic community. WYD typically involves days of prayer, reflection, catechesis (faith formation), Mass, music, and cultural exchange, culminating in a vigil and final Mass with the Pope.

The gathering is held in a different city every few years, and it is open to youth aged 16 to 35. Participants are encouraged to live out the values of the Gospel in their daily lives, take part in community service, and be agents of change and hope in the world. WYD is not just an event but a life-changing pilgrimage of faith, and it offers young people the opportunity to be empowered by the Holy Spirit to grow in discipleship, build lasting relationships, and make a difference in their communities.

Since its inception, WYD has grown into one of the largest and most significant gatherings of young people in the world, with millions of youth coming together to meet the Pope and share their common faith. Looking forward, WYD Seoul 2027 promises to be a unique opportunity, as South Korea will be the first non-Christian-majority country to host this global gathering. The Archdiocese of Port of Spain will once again provide an opportunity for youth to participate in this life-changing pilgrimage.

World Youth Day Celebration on the Feast of Christ the King

Each year, the Archdiocese of Port of Spain joins the global Church in celebrating World Youth Day (WYD) on the Feast of Christ the King. This is a special moment for youth across Trinidad and Tobago to come together in prayer, worship, and fellowship, marking the universal celebration of Christ as King of the Universe. It is also time to celebrate the spiritual commitment so many young people make. On this day, young people are encouraged to reflect on the themes of the Gospel, renew their commitment to Christ, and the Church honours the energy and vitality of youth.
